World’s Biggest Wind Farm is Found in Texas

The final phase of Roscoe, Texas wind farm was completed October 2009. It made it the world’s largest wind farm having an operational potential of 781.5 MW.

According to E.ON Climate and Renewables it is the largest wind farm on the planet. Moreover, the project had an expenditure of more than $1 billion and covers a surface of 320 Km.

According to CEO of German-based E.On AG’s business unit in North America, to construct the largest wind farm, it required coordination of a total of 300 landowners involving 500 employees.

Texas has been the leading state in wind energy since 2006. It had a capacity of around 2,400 megawatts. It has by now expanded to 8,355 megawatts based on figures from state grid operator. Moreover, the grid is expanded to allow the wind capacity to twice in some years.

It is certain that wind farms are more environment friendly than fossil fuel. There is no carbon emission. Wind energy is most appropriate in sparsely populated regions such as Texas Panhandle and West Texas.

Growth of wind Farms in Texas

The largest wind farm, Roscoe covers 40, 500 hectares over four counties in Texas. It is much larger than Manhattan. The wind farm generates energy through 627 turbines that have been produced by General Electric, Siemens and Mitsubishi.

E. ON Climate does now have world capacity of 2,600 where 1,488 Mega is from wind Farms in Texas (U.S). Two other recent projects completed are 458-MW Panther Creek wind farm near Big Spring, Texas, and the 180-MW Papalote Creek wind farm near Corpus Christi which will soon be completed.

The company is also engaging other mega-structures such as Britain’s big London Array offshore wind project which is expected to become another leader, in the field wind energy worldwide.
