An Overview of Solar Power and the Environment

“Every generation needs regeneration” By, Charles H. Spurgeon

Environmental awareness is what conservatisms are trying to propel on the red-tappet as the earth suffers from expanding negative consequences of global warming. There is a handful of human practices that is genuinely harmful for our planet. Our generation must have a core objective, if not an obligation to preserve and minimize precarious wrongdoings that are provoking greenhouse gases. Solar energy the most omnipresent source of renewable energy is the most likely solution that can be envisaged for the environment.

The process of converting sunrays into electricity is called solar power. There are mainly two approaches used to generate electricity from the sun. These methods are indirect and direct. The direct method uses solar panels (photovoltaic) which does speedily convert sunrays into electricity. The indirect approach make use of concentrating solar power (CSP), whereby the heat harnessed from the sun is used to boil water and is thereby turned into solar power.

The direct approach to generate solar power is common to household but not limited to it. There are also several solar plants that use photovoltaic solar panels to generate energy at large scale. In Portugal and Germany, power stations having a capacity of 46 and 40 MW, respectively have been constructed. A holistic step towards solar energy is being experienced worldwide. It is becoming a fact that solar energy and environment conservation is mutually inclusive.

The major downfall of solar energy is it inconsistent supply. During winters in regions such as Virginia, the sunlight is insufficient to produce electricity required. Moreover, the sun does also not shine at dusk, when the highest level of energy is required by households.

Potential Uses of Solar Energy
1. Pervasive Uses

Photovoltaic’s has since long been used in contemporary technology such as watches and calculators. At such a small-scale only single cells where used.

2. Automobile

Powering cars with solar energy is already in research. Transportation cost is likely going to fall drastically if every solar powered automobiles breakthroughs.

3. Manufacturing

In the operation and production industry, a major cost is energy. The use of solar panels integrated into roofs and other types of infrastructures will reduce CO2 emission and save cost. According to calculations by “Google”, their solar installation will pay-for-itself after 7.5 years.

Solar power is likely to become more ubiquitous as technology and environmental awareness brings it forward. The drive for substitution of fossil fuel is a wise recommendation by environmentalists across the field.
