Introduction and Growth in the Geothermal Energy Market

Energy is heightened in use, the most prevailing energy sources heard are wind and solar. Yet there is other, such as geothermal that is gradually becoming more competitive as an additional alternative for fossil fuel to produce sustainable energy.

To produce electricity from the heat of the earth has a history of more than hundred years. Geothermal energy was first experimented in a 10 KW generator at Larderello, Italy in 1904. Thereafter the technology has spread over the world and is now used in more than 24 countries. It is expected to become more common in the future.

Since mid-2008, the supply of geothermal energy did already exceed 10, 000 megawatts which is sufficient to supply up to 60 million people with energy. In 2010, the supply is expected to spread over to 46 countries reaching a total capacity of 13,500 MW of geothermal holidays.

There are lots of investors that are focusing on investing in geothermal energy. Four companies in the field of geothermal energy have been enlisted below:

1. “Ram Power, Corp

Ram Power, Corp”. is a relatively young company that was founded in 2008. The company concentrates on providing renewable energy; geothermal energy. Its core market is United States but it does also operate at a global level. The company did very recently merge with three publically owned Canadian Geothermal Power Companies, in order to benefit from economies of scales. The company has recently been highly determined to develop and expand its geothermal projects in California, Nevada, Nicaragua and Canada. The primordial mission remains to become a leader in global renewable power energy.

2. Geodynamics Limited
This company was registered as a public company since November 2000 and on the Australian Stock Exchange after two years. The main objective of the company is to produce geothermal energy from hot fractured rocks in Australia. The energy is generated from heat harnessed from granites found beneath the earth surface, having water circulated aside it. This source of energy according to Geodynamics can provide a substantial level of energy. It can supply around 7 percent of total demand of Australian population by 2030.

Up-to date five geothermal drilling projects have been conducted in Australia. Three wells at Habenero, are of a depth of 4, 200 meters and also the first commercial geothermal well in Australia. It is projecting that by 2012; a 50 megawatt plant will be established providing enough energy to 50,000 households.

3. “Envent Holding Philippines Inc

This company was launched in 2007 and concentrates on geothermal project in Philippines. Philippines is a very large provider of energy through geothermal energy. Its geothermal energy represents almost a quarter of its total supply and the country is projecting to increase its capacity by more than two-third by 2013. The biggest project generates 50 MW and has a potential capacity of 150 MW on the plant established on the island of Biliran in the Eastern Visayas region, which has an estimated potential of more than 150 MW.

There are many other companies that are investing in similar project such as “Raser Technologies”, Geysir Green Energy and Reykjavik Energy Invest. Geothermal energy is likely to spread further in the years to come.
