Enel Green Power Renewable

Enel Group settled a subsidiary Enel Green Power to be responsible for creating and producing renewable energy across-international borders.

The company is presently monitoring 500 plants set-up around the world to generate a total of 4,500 MW of energy from alternative sources. The vision of the company is to expand significantly in the coming years in various technologies associated with renewable energy.

According to figures in 2008, Enel Green Power generates 17.3 TWh which is enough to fuel 6.5 million houses and prevent a total of 13 million tones of greenhouse emissions. The Italian company is operating in North America, Europe and Latin America. Its operating capacity per 2008 in Italy amounts to 2,547 MW, producing 10.3 TWh. This makes the company a leader in hydropower, solar technologies and geothermal.

The company is planning to expand further to assure a market leader position in geothermal and small hydropower. The recent shift has been to the focus on solar and Wind Power.

Position in North America

Across North America, the company is present in 2 Canadian provinces and 20 states. The company has a wide portfolio of renewable sources of energy in North America. According 2008 figures, it has a renewable energy capacity of 749 MW amounting to 1.9 TWh that is produced from geothermal, biomass, hydropower and wind energy.

Recent projects that have been completed in North America are the 2 Geothermal plants in Nevada (Churchill County) and one of the largest wind farms having a potential of 250 MW. The wind farm produces sufficient energy to supply 85, 000 houses and prevent 750, 000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.

Position in Europe

In Europe (apart from Italy) the total installed capacity is 502 MW according to 2008 figures. These renewable sources of energy are produced in France, Bulgaria, Greece, France and Spain. Besides, several additional projects are in condition of work-in-progress.

Position in South America

In Latin America Enel Green Power is operating 35 plants in 8 countries (Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama Costa Rica, El Salvador, Chile, Brazil and Guatemala). The company is generating energy from hydropower, geothermal and wind power in the region up to a capacity of 667 MW and for 2008 3.5 TWh.

The main source of energy in South America is hydropower which represents 30 of 35 plants and is established in 6 of the 8 countries. Hydropower produces 643 MW of 667 MW.
