Where Are The Best Locations For Wind Farm Installations?

Installing a wind turbine farm requires a great deal of advanced set up. Placing a wind turbine in an area that experiences a fair amount of wind is only part of the overall installation process. Wind facility operators must not only find a location where wind is plentiful but also wind speed is part of the careful planning process when choosing a location.

These operators know that wind speed becomes faster as altitude increases and in barren regions where there are no natural windshields. Ideal locations for wind farms are where the wind can rise from lower areas to altitude. For instance, a great place to install a wind farm would be along a flat, smooth hill, an open field like terrain or along a coastline and in mountainous areas in gaps where would form in a tunneling effect.

Variable Wind Speed

Within the border of the United States wind velocity is varied and it also has diverse patterns according to which season it falls in. The region around Tehachapi, California, between the months of April to October then wind is harsher than during winter season. The wind during this period is greater because of severe heating caused by the Mojave Desert in the months of summer. The heated desert air rises up and cooler Pacific Ocean air at great speeds surpasses the Tehachapi Mountain where it replaces the vacuum. That is compared to the state of Montana where the wind is much more relentless in the winter months.

The good thing is these seasonal wind patterns happen to correspond with the electricity current demands in these areas. In Montana, the electricity is required more in the winter months for heating use and in California; the population utilizes their air conditioner more in the summertime.

States With A Higher Wind Generation

Wind turbine or wind devices were generating electricity in thirty one states in 2008. Of these thirty one states, Texas, California, Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma were the largest producers of wind generated power.

International Wind Turbine Facilities

Thanks to heavy government support, the majority of wind power installations are located in the United States and Europe. Data collected for the year 2008 on wind energy production showed the United States of America had the highest quantity of wind energy capability and was followed by Germany, Spain then China. The nation of Denmark was ranked in ninth place worldwide for wind power production and derives a full twenty percent of its electricity requirements from the wind.

Offshore Wind Generation

The United States has a huge coastline and this makes wind power production a natural fit, as much of the shore would be suitable. The problem is with many US citizens would rather not see the coastal regions laced with wind farms ruining the natural vista so they oppose project construction. Numerous projects are on the drawing board or in the process of approval for offshore wind facilities, i.e. in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and off the coast of the New York City area.

Wind energy is a wonderful form of renewable power and makes an excellent replacement for fossil fuels. It is a clean energy that is available in abundance.
