Australia’s New Solar Chimney Power Plant Is As Innovative As It Is Immense

A novel form of solar power generation has been evaluated and approved for production in Australia. The solar power station is a technical marvel and based on technology expertise from Germany.

The amazing thing about the new solar technology is the minimalism and ease of its engineering; it also uses rudimentary guidelines of physics to generate energy. So what is the new solar power installation?

It is a new solar tower that is also called a solar chimney and it uses solar energy to power wind turbines. It is a form of hybrid technology in that sense of using two forms of renewable energy to produce one power stream.

What Is The Mechanism Of Action? – Solar Energy Turning Wind Turbines

The easiest way to explain the process is to measure it up to a very large greenhouse with a large chimney. Everyone understands that hot air rises, the greenhouse inside the solar chimney collects the suns energy and that heated air from the greenhouse will then be released through the enormous chimney. However, prior to the hot air run off from the chimney it gets routed through wind turbines, these turbines produce electrical current.

An advantage of this type of tech design is it utilizes a principle that is hundreds of years old known as updraft. The method is the same as that used in fireplace chimneys around the world. Your house stays smoke free when burning a fire because suction is formed when the hot air rises into the chimney and at the same time it pulls the smoke through with it.

The solar tower scenario is unique in that there is no fire to make hot air. Only the sun is utilized to irradiate its energy and heat things, and that happens to be the air inside the solar tower model, then that air shoots through the solar chimney.

The country of Australia is the first nation to construct this variety of solar power plant for commercialization. The central tower structure will be more than three thousand feet tall with a four hundred foot diameter. Constructing it will require seven hundred fifty thousand cubic yards of concrete and the greenhouse solar capture station will enclose thirty million square yards of space, more than 3.5 miles in diameter.

There will be 32 wind turbines built at ground depth, all capable of generating 6.25 megawatts of electrical current each. The project will require thirty four months to complete and when it is finished, it should produce 200 megawatts of power, that is enough solar generated electricity for more than two hundred thousand residences.

There will be no worries about CO² emission, greenhouse gases or any polluting contaminants for that matter. That is good news and means it will be one hundred percent entirely eco-friendly. The project is very innovative and has proven it works based on initial tests. That bodes well for future solar tower energy projects within and perhaps outside of Australia.

One drawback is the immense size of the power plant. Its size would be prohibitive to some countries and utility operators who have enough trouble installing other varieties of solar power plants because of the amount of land necessary for solar arrays with such a large footprint. The solar tower / solar chimney looks like it may be in for the same challenges.
