The British government recently made nearly £6 million or nearly ten million USD, available to finance investigation into natural underground energy sources. Deep Geothermal is a renewable form of energy that is gaining in popularity as an alternative source of power. It utilizes innate heat sources from deep within the earth to generate reliable electricity production and heat above ground.
The money forms part of the Department of Energy and Climate Change low energy carbon investment financing that will subsidize those businesses that perform the investigative labor required to locate suitable locations for geothermal energy technology.
The Minister in charge of Energy and Climate Change, Lord Hunt stated that deep geothermal energy is stimulating and inventive technology that could mean clean energy with low carbon output that is renewable, producing heat and power within the United Kingdom.
He also said that they need to be sure that this form of power can be an integral part of future low carbon energy options. Deep geothermal power generated in south west England by itself could cover two percent of the UK’s per annum electricity usage while bringing thousands of labor hours to the nation operating and constructing these new power structures.
Countries from around the globe including Australia and the United States are recognizing the huge potential of deep geothermal power as a low price and low carbon energy resource that is reliable. Deep geothermal power would enrich and expand England’s current energy combination and also ease the dependence on foreign fossil fuel imports.
Right now, there is only one geothermal power facility in the United Kingdom – the Southampton District Energy Scheme. This power facility utilizes hot water siphoned from eighteen hundred meters below ground level forming a section of the regions heating network. The plant has been in operation for more than twenty years without a hitch and relieves the environment from what is thought to be about eleven thousand tonnes of CO² every year.
Groups having a project in Scotland, Wales and England are allowed to tender on the money. An available £4 million is available in the current year and £2 million the next fiscal year.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change will be evaluating and administering all project proposals. All successful tenders for the first round of funding will be announced soon. Other renewable power projects are underway in Great Britain, specifically the construction of wind farms that take advantage of prevailing winds off the UK coast.
