America is already addicted to foreign oil and this reliance on imported fossil fuel is just the beginning of what could be a future dependency on foreign imports of renewable energy technology. Wind turbines that are produced by European facilities could make their way to the shores of the eastern coast, transporting their power to American cities up and down the seaboard. This is according to government and private industry officials who are trying to intervene on potential new offshore energy reliance.
Offshore wind power production is gaining momentum but there remain some significant barriers that are thwarting wind turbine developers from creating manufacturing services, which would enable them to provide the eastern most states with American made wind power technology. Industry experts have shown support and a belief in America’s capability to institute a thriving offshore wind development going concern. They have also expressed some anxiousness over the procedures that are not being done to achieve this potential.
The US still has not installed a single wind turbine on the ocean floor but Europe continues to construct one wind farm after another offshore. They are installing an average of one megawatt of capacity each day, so says an industry faction observing the growth. European wind farms situated offshore are producing one thousand four hundred seventy one megawatts, equal to the quantity of electricity produced by an extremely big coal burning power plant.
The fear is that if the US does not get its collective act together, the Europeans will take the lead, said an authority on the wind power manufacturing business. They will garner all of the wind power skill and also the opportunity to market their equipment to Americans. The US wind power industry waiting idly by as this happens could turn out to be very costly.
The United States need to wake up and begin to let some company start erecting the initial power farm in the ocean waters off the coast. This could turn out to be Cape Wind which is a 130 turbine development projected to be installed five miles from shore off Massachusetts’ coast. At issue is the fact it has been bogged down in regulated purgatory for eight years now. This is an indicator of what is keeping manufacturers sidelined and funding out of reach.
No one appears to recognize the looming reactive results of having this possible power supply in channel or waiting to proceed. The builders of components will not arrange for construction of manufacturing plants until they can clearly see a commitment from some level of authority that there will be an eventual demand for their systems in the form of numerous projects proceeding or firmly scheduled.
There have been some serious discussions on the matter with manufacturers and they might consider a quote asking for additional wind turbines in the production channel. Still others say it is bigger than that and that wind turbine manufacturers need to see a proposal for the next ten years calling for assurances of one thousand wind turbines to be built and installed.
Rather than sending American dollars overseas to oil exporting nations, instead American dollars are going to end up in overseas nations that export wind turbines for offshore installation. Tens of thousands of potential American labor hours will be lost to overseas suppliers along with the billions of dollars.
