In San Francisco, the Google Inc energy unit has decided to purchase wind power from NextEra Energy Inc, for the next two decades in order to provide electricity to its data centers.
This deal was sealed within a quarter since the Giant Silicon Valley internet search company decided to invest a total of $38.8 million in two wind farms, situated in North Dakota, which was produced by NextEra Energy resources. These two wind farms provide enough electricity to power as much as 55,000 households.
As from 30th of July Google Energy LLC will engage itself to purchase wind energy from NextEra’s facility located at Iowa. According to Google’s senior vice president of operations, Urs Hoelzle, this will be on a predetermined rate (source Google blog).
According to Hoelzle, this wind power facility will be able to provide electricity to several data centers.
In the recent years, Google has made an Olympian effort to tackle climate change. This high-tech company did in 2007, say that it would strive to invest in green companies and even carry out research on ways to make renewable energy cheaper. In other words, generating electricity at prices cheaper than coal power should be possible according to Google. This should happen within only a few years.
The Google Energy Unit helps the company’s capacity to purchase renewable energy, and it is committed to pursuing its effort.
