China Plans Renewable Energy Demonstration City

The Chinese Government is serious when talking about small or large-scale projects. They do not stop halfway.

Currently, the government is emphasising on reducing the country’s heavy addiction to coal. It is therefore, going for renewable energy. The central government has already approved a plan to construct a renewable demonstration city in Turpan (Xinjiang Uigher Autonomous Region).

This demo will act as a model for other green development projects in China. It will also portray china’s motivation to indulge in renewable energy at a global scale. The city leaders haven’t been involved much in the proceedings of the project. They have simply been required to provide 8.8 square kilometers for the demonstration zone to be created.

With the use of solar energy, Turpan will show how renewable energy can work together with urban development. During a year, Turpan is exposed to a total of 3,200 hours of direct sunshine. This makes it an ideal location. There will be solar panels installed on the roofs of buildings together with a separate 13 MW photovoltaic plant which will provide power to public transportation vehicles and the local electricity requirement.

The city is expected to welcome a population of 60,000 in a few years. It is also predicted that geothermal energy will be used for heating, cooling as well as for transportation: electric taxis and buses.

According to Zhang Baoguo who is the head of china’s National Energy Administration (NEA), the country is striving to increase its dependency on renewable energy. Actually, renewable energy does account for around 8 percent of the primary-energy consumption. China has also claimed to the international community that by 2020, 15 percents of China’s energy needs will be derived from clean energy.

A new renewable energy law has already been approved by The National People’s Congress. Furthermore, the NEA has also successfully created an energy development plan for the country. Eventually, China is constantly going towards the expansion of low-carbon energy sources.
