The very first joint solar power and desalination plant will be build in Cyprus, succeeding the accomplishment of a research project done by the Cyprus Institute.

The objective of the research was to offer a practical solution to the problem of water shortage that is faces by Cyprus and various other Mediterranean countries, while taking into account the requirement for a sustainable energy source that support a sustainable supply of water.

Amidst the key findings of the study is that solar energy, as compared to photovoltaic or wind energy, can be stored. This supplements the efficiency of solar energy in terms of a source for sustainable electrical power.

In accordance with Costas Papanicolaou, the president of Cyprus Institute, the plant would indeed prove the effectiveness of the research’s advanced results. This provides the possibility for Cyprus to sell the knowledge of the method to a number of other countries.

This pioneering research was carried out by the Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the University of Illinois and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), over a time period of two years, beginning in June 2008.

Along with the presentation of the research’s findings, an announcement from the Ministry of Interior also came, providing the Institute land within the area of Pentakomo on which the plant will be constructed. However, it is unknown when the building of the novel plant will get off the ground.

It is estimated that the plant will cost approximately €25 million, excluding the cost of the land that has been provided by the government.

Neoclis Sylikiotis, the Minister of Interior, laid emphasis on the project’s importance in assisting Cyprus achieve recognition on an international basis in the field of innovative research.
