India surfacing; Comparing Size of Renewable Energy Projects Under-Way

There are many colossal projects envisaged across the globe. In China and Africa, the objective of making the most out of wind and sun energy is at the forefront. Now, India may become a key player in the global market as they are going towards renewable energy at large scale.

Airvoice Group and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam are planning for mega projects in a rural area of India known as Karnatake. The aim is to harness 13 gigawatts (GW) where 3 GW from wind farms and 10 GW from photovoltaic.

In China and Africa, the projects are much larger than 13 GW. For instance, “China is about to develop a 20 GW wind farm” whereas the “Desertec Project” in Africa will target 100 GW. However, the wind energy project in China is expected to be exceeded by venture in India. Airvoice Group, a known Indian mobile phone and commodity export firm and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (Conglomeration between India’s Government and the district of Himachal Pradesh) are going to invest more than $50 billion over the decade.

The first 13 GW projects will be established at Karnataka, which is eventually found in the southwest of India. There are already 12 sites that have been selected; four for wind farms and eight for solar farms. The first stage of the development will be initiated in around 36 months and will have an expected supply of 100 MW from solar and 200 from wind energy. According to Sanjay Kapoor, the chairman and managing director of AirVoice group, tenders for wind turbines will start in the coming month. Many companies will be involved in tendering their wind turbines such as Suzlon and Eurowinds.

This project according to company officials is going to be the largest in the world.
