Solar capacity is being expanded by First Solar and Enbridge Inc as per a recent agreement. The expansion of Sarnia Solar Project in Canada from 20 MW to a potential capacity of 80 MW will cost around CDN $300 million.
The Sarnia Solar Farm achieved its full operation capacity of 20 MW in early December 2009. First Solar and Enbridge are already working together to make it one of the biggest solar plants in North America. The whole project is expected to terminate in the third quarter of 2010.
Once the Solar farm reaches 80 MW of capacity, Enbridge assumes that it will be able to power up to 12,800 households. This will be tantamount to decreasing as much as 39,000 tones of CO2 emission annually.
The solar farm will cover a large region. There will be 1.3 million thin film solar panels shining over 240 acres of land. The annual production of electricity will be around 120 million KWh.
Enbridge Inc is intensely going towards a green portfolio. It operates as much as 470 MW of renewable power from solar farms, five wind power farms, hybrid-fuel cell technology and waste heat recovery.
This gigantic Sarnia Solar Project of 80 MW will be bought by Ontario Power Authority through a long-term purchase agreement spanning over 20 years.
